Religious Statement on the Housing Struggle

A Religious Response

to the Struggle for Affordable Housing

As people of faith, we prayerfully support the families of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union in their struggle for affordable housing.

The actions of recent weeks have been dubbed "illegal" at times, but remain powerful witnesses to a higher law. In doing so, they are a wake-up call to all people of faith to work for God's justice. We will not reach that goal by silence, much less cooperation with the welfare reform which is causing so much suffering. We ask you to do all you can to support this campaign, because:

We believe...

  • We are made for life.
  • We are made for living.
  • We are all sacred.
  • That life must be honored.

Our sacredness is violated any time our life is threatened; when our lives are taken away.

As stewards of creation we must honor and uphold life.

Welfare Reform threatens life. Homelessness threatens life. This is unacceptable.

The righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' And the king will answer them, "Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me."

Matthew 25:43

People of faith have historically opposed oppression even when it meant going against the government, society and even the Church itself. People of faith will continue to choose people over principalities until the Kingdom of God comes on earth.

Please join us in any way you can to support this campaign. We are in need of donations, prayers, and an audience for the voices of the families involved in this struggle. If you can help, please contact the Kensington Welfare Rights Union.
