New Housing Campaign
Begins
[5-27-00]:
While others prepare for picnics this Memorial Weekend, members of the
Kensington Welfare Rights Union launch HOUSING TAKE-OVER CAMPAIGN, due
to another large number of homeless mothers and children having nowhere
to live in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia's homeless
crisis continues to grow while the city prepares for the Republican National
Convention. Lanterns, food, pagers and bail money are all needed to keep
these children off the streets.
Please send what you can
today. Organize for July 31st.
[5-28-00]: Today an eviction
began with a mother and her four children being thrown out of an abandoned
HUD house.
This mother works full
time for a real-estate agency; she has 4 children, the oldest is nine,
the youngest is one. This weekend brings no picnic for this mother and
her children.
Thanks to KWRU and our
underground railroad we will continue to house this family and others.
It's time now to move
on to yet another house, open the doors and keep these children off the
street. Putting children on our streets should be against the law. Philadelphia
continues to have more abandoned houses than homeless people; we continue
to ask why we allow people to be homeless when we live in a land of plenty.
We need your help.
