KWRU Travels to El Salvador
to Build Relationships with Poor
[March 12, 2000] Day
3: Elections and Health Care Strike
Yesterday, representatives
from KWRU spent the day observing the elections for mayor and deputy in
San Vicente. In a very close vote, the FMLN became the majority party.
The upcoming years will be interesting for this community.
In addition to the elections,
we learned about a major strike by health care workers fighting privatization
of the health care industry. The recently resolved strike had two purposes:
to prevent the layoff of hospital and health care workers, and to ensure
that all Salvadorans, not just those with money, have the right to health
care. The strike ended with the temporary assurance that health care would
not be privatized. The struggle over health care will continue, as the
majority of the Salvadoran people still don't have access to health care.
Stay tuned for further updates
and photos following the trial of Cheri Honkala!
Dia 3: Eleccion y Huelga del
Servicio de Salud
Ayer, algunos representantes
