OUR CONTINUED HOUSING CRISIS The Kensington Welfare Rights Union continues our hard work to secure housing for our membership. -A KWRU member died last night while on the city's waiting list for housing. Carlos, who had AIDS, was not a priority to the city. We housed him in one of our human rights houses, but now his family members remain homeless. -Another KWRU member who just came back from Iraq on medical discharge had his house foreclosed on and is now homeless. The city is not helping Louis, a veteran, find housing for himself and his family- a wife and two kids -and so we are desperately seeking emergency housing for the four of them while they continue to live in their car. -We continue to work with a number of members who have open DHS cases because they do not have housing. Jackie, whose building was condemned by License and Inspections (L&I), is left with nowhere to go. Instead of trying to find the families who were living in the building adequate housing, L&I called DHS and now all the mothers are in jeopardy of losing their children. If you
have mattresses, other household supplies, non perishable food items,
or other donations, please call our office at 215-203-1945 and ask for
Charles. You can also reach Charles at 267-235-8982. Checks can be sent
to our post office box at PO BOX 50678, PHILADELPHIA, PA 19125. |
