KWRU Defendants found NOT-GUILTY

July 14, 2004.
KWRU defendants Cheri Honkala, Maria Del Moral, Carol Ceasar, Lee Webster, and Anne Kretzmann were found not guilty after facing charges of criminal trespass and a stay away order from city hall.

The KWRU members were arrested in December of 2003 at city hall while attempting to secure housing for 6 women who were victims of domestic violence.

Poor Peoples Economic Human Rights Campaign National Coordinator, Cheri Honkala testified to eminent danger these women were in. Specifically, one woman after being denied shelter was abused again and ended up in the hospital. Recognizing the greater good we served and our right to free speech inside city hall the judge found all the defendents not guilty on all the charges.

Although we were able to secure this victory, we know that everyday in Philadelphia hundreds of other victims of domestic violence remain in dangerous situations. It is criminal that only 50 beds are available for victims of domestic violence, when 200 women alone were killed last year as a a result of domestic violence. Something has to be done about this crisis. We need your support in the fight for affordable housing in the city of Philadelphia and across the country.
