The Kensington Welfare Rights
Union Will Speak Out Against Judge's Decision to Extend a Stay Away Order
Banning Members From City Hall Just Weeks Before Mayor's Budget Address
Philadelphia, PA - On December
19th 2003, Cheri Honkala and members of the Kensington Welfare Rights
Union spent two days in jail and now face misdemeanors in the third degree
and were issued a stay away order from City Hall for protesting the city's
failure to protect six victims of domestic violence and their children.
At the preliminary hearing
on March 1st, 2004 five members of KWRU stood before the court facing
charges of criminal trespass as well as a stay away order from city hall.
At the hearing, their attorney entered a motion to eliminate the stay
away order on the grounds that it was unconstitutional; instead the judge
extended it.
The Kensington Welfare Rights
Union is fully aware that the Mayor will be giving his budget address
this month and questions the timing of the ban and its extension. Ms.
Honkala has missed a number of meetings with city council members as a
result of the stay away order and it has halted discussion of any long
term progress on domestic violence issues in this city.
The Kensington Welfare Rights
Union will be holding a press conference on Wednesday, March 10th to address
the timing of the stay away order as well as its effect on the ability
of KWRU members to exercise their first amendment right to speak out against
the Mayor's anticipated budget cuts later this month. The criminal trial
is scheduled to begin Tuesday, March 16th at 8am at the Criminal Justice
Center in room 1003.
