Banned from City Hall in Fight
for Women's Safety
Kensington Welfare Rights members
just spent the last few days in jail after trying to secure emergency
housing for over six families who are victims of domestic violence in
the Philadelphia area. We refuse to have victims of domestic violence
placed in city shelters that cannot meet the specific safety needs of
women who are in danger of their lives. After laying seven to a jail cell
with cockroaches and lying on ice cold cement floors we were given misdemeanors
in the third degree and told that we have a stay away order from city
hall. We cannot go to our mayor's office, nor our city council representatives,
nor testify before city council. We went to jail and now are going to
have to stand trial and we can't even enter our own city hall; but what
is worst of all is that these women's lives are in danger in Philadelphia
and that our city officials don't give a damn!
Please send us a letter of
outrage and support so that we may deliver them to our mayor.
