In
Need of Homeland Security
Homeless families and other members of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union
took to the streets of downtown to demand "Homes for the Holidays."
Marching
behind a banner that stretched across Market Street, families blocked
rush hour traffic on their way to city hall.
While the Bush administration spends $87 billion on war, families in Philadelphia
and across the country are suffering and dying from homelessness and poverty.
Thousands of families will children are homeless this holiday season,
while money is spent on an immoral and unjust war.
Chanting
"What do we want for the Holidays? Affordable Housing!", "Housing
is a Human Right" and House our Children, House them now!" the
group swelled in numbers as they were joined by members of New Jerusalem
Laura and ADAPT.
The group was cheered on by
those stopped in traffic, with one homeless mother joining the group after
being turned away the shelter system.
The
group culminated the evening circling the Christmas tree at City Hall
and left the banner "In Need of Homeland Security" for Mayor
Street.
Please join us in coming weeks as we continue to struggle for Homes for
the Holidays for the dozens of homeless families with no place to go who
have come looking to the KWRU for help in recent weeks. We will continue
our fight for REAL Homeland Security which means providing families with
their basic human
rights - housing, healthcare, heat, food, water and all the basic necessities
of life.
