KWRU speaks at the School
of the Americas Watch Vigil and Rally in Fort Benning, Georgia
[11-22-03]: After experiencing
first hand repression of the poor both in Philadelphia and this week during
the FTAA protests in Miami, members of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union
today joined in the rally and vigil to close the School of the Americas
in Fort Benning, Georgia. Speaking to the thousands gathered, Cheri Honkala
(director of the KWRU and national spokesperson for the Poor People's
Economic Human Rights Campaign) insisted that poverty is one of the root
causes of war, and that the struggle against war and repression must involve
also the fight to end economic violence, such as NAFTA and the FTAA.
Poverty, she declared, is NOT the will of God; it's the result of greed.
While calling for end to the terror committed by SOA graduates, Cheri
also called for a movement to end the terror of poverty and economic human
rights violations suffered by millions of people without health care,
jobs, food and housing here in the richest country in the world.
We the poor will not be disappeared or silenced in the fight for our very
lives, both here at home and around the world.

KWRU habla en la vigilia para cerrar la Escuela de las Americas en Fort
Benning, Georgia
Despues de experimentar personalmente la represion de los pobres en Filadelfia
y esta semana durante las protestas en contra del ALCA en Miami, miembros
del Kensington Welfare Rights Union hoy se unieron con miles de gente
en la manifestacion en contra de la Escuela de las Americas en Fort benning,
Georgia. Hablando a los miles de personas reunidas alla, Cheri Honkala
(directora del KWRU y portavoz nacional de la Campana de los Pobres por
los Derechos Humanos Economicos) insistio en que la pobreza es una de
las causas fundamentales de la guerra, y que la lucha en contra de la
guerra y la represion tambien tiene que involucrar la lucha para acabar
con la violencia economica, como el TLCAN y el ALCA.
La pobrez no es la voluntad de Dios, sino el resultado de la codicia,
declaro Cheri. Exigiendo un fin al terror cometido por los graduados de
la Escuela de las Americas, Cheri tambien hizo una llamada por un movimiento
para acaba con el terror de la pobreza y de las violaciones a los derechos
humanos economicos sufridas por millones de gente sin cuidadio de salud,
trabajo, comida y vivienda aqui en el pais mas rico del mundo.
Nosotros los pobres no seremos desaparecidos ni callados en la lucha por
nuestras vidas, sea aqui o en cualquiera otra parte del mundo.
