UPDATE ON MIAMI HERALD DEMONSTRATION:
[11-22-03]: Miami Herald Executive
Editor Tom Fiedler requested a meeting with Cheri Honkala to discuss the
KWRU’s plan to hold a demonstration in front of the newspaper to
protest the media’s coverage of the FTAA demonstrations.
Ms. Honkala, along with two representatives from the KWRU, went to Mr.
Field’s office the morning of the demonstration and were promised
two things. First, the Miami Herald would commit to printing more stories
that focused on the real danger NAFTA and the FTAA pose to poor people
in this country and to the poor around the world. Second, the Miami Herald
committed to printing more stories that had poor people speaking for themselves
and making their voices heard about issues that directly affect them.
Given that Miami is the poorest city in the country, the KWRU felt that
the paper had an extra responsibility to have the voices of poor people,
who are the real casualties of NAFTA, represented in their coverage. Miami
Herald editor Tom Fiedler also invited Ms. Honkala to write an editorial
about the media blackout on issues of poverty.
The KWRU held their demonstration in front of the Miami Herald on Friday,
November 21st as planned.
