KWRU to Sue City Police Department
On July 4, 2003, Cheri Honkala
and Galen Tyler, leaders of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union, were
arested, detained, and
charged with 8 felonies and misdemeanors, including aggravated assualt
on a police officer. These charges incuded 20 years of enforceable prison
time.
On September 2, 2003, the District
Attorney of Philadelphia County withdrew all criminal charges against
Cheri and Galen after reviewing videotaped evidence which demonstrated
that there had been no grounds to arrest Plaintiffs.
For our safety we have come
to the conclusion that we no other choice but to sue the Philadelphia
Police Department. All we have is our voice, we will not be silenced.
As poor people in America we
will continue to lift our voice ensuring that all people have economic
human rights. We will lift our voice in DC on October 25, at the demonstration
to bring our troops home, in Miami, during the demonstrations against
the FTAA, at the world social forum in India, and as we march on opening
day of the Republican National Convention in New York City.
Please multiply this voice
on listserves, websites, newsletters, and bulletins.
