Willie Baptist Delivers Commencement

Willie Baptist, KWRU Education Director, was the commencement speaker, August 15, at Smith College School of Social Work. Among the 105 recipients of the MSW degree from this prestigious school were two members of the Social Work Strategy Subcommittee, Marsha Johnson and Sarah Gentry.

Jennifer Jones, a Smith MSW alumna and a lead trainer in our subcommittee’s educational program for social workers, will be in the audience, as will Prof. Fred Newdom, who teaches part-time at Smith and has sent us these energetic, committed “Smithies” over the years.

Willie’s invitation from the school administration followed his visit to the campus last year, where his presentations on social workers in the movement inspired students and staff. As KWRU Education Director, Willie oversees the work of the Social Work Strategy Subcommittee and is very involved in its programs. He is co-field instructor for the many Temple and Penn students who do their placements at KWRU, co-coordinates the Economic Human Rights-Pennsylvania campaign (a joint KWRU & NASW project), and participates in our research work groups.

All three Smith alumnae based their MSW theses on research conducted at KWRU.
