KWRU Moves Homeless
Families into Philadelphia Convention Center
Thursday, November 30. Philadelphia:
At 9:00 this morning, members
of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union moved homeless families into the
Philadelphia Convention Center. The KWRU demanded that these homeless
families be given vouchers for a warm, safe place to stay together during
the holiday season, while the families search for affordable housing.
The families had moved into abandoned homes on Thanksgiving.
The city refused to meet the
moral demands of these homeless families. After a few hours of surveillance
and a standoff with the police, the KWRU refused to back down from our
demands and seven members were arrested. They were each charged
with third degree misdemeanors. They are currently in police custody now.
Please stand by for more information
about the arrested KWRU members and the fight for affordable housing in
Philadelphia.
