KWRU Attends IMF Protests in Washington DC

[April 16, 2000] Today a busload of KWRU members traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the rally and protests against the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Under a warm sun, KWRU members rallied and listened to many speeches. Soon after a speech given by Ralph Nader, Cheri Honkala, Director of the KWRU, addressed the crowd of thousands. In her speech, she spoke to not only the poverty that exists in developing nations but the poverty that exists right here in the United States. She emphasized the fact that poor people themselves will continue to organize and lead the growing movement to end poverty throughout the world.

The crowd roared as Honkala announced plans for the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign and the Kensington Welfare Rights Union to hold a massive rally and march in Philadelphia July 31, 2000 which is the opening day of the Republican National Convention.

KWRU's participation in the demonstrations reminded IMF/WB protestors that policies like welfare reform are our own domestic form of "structural adjustment programs" in an attempt to drive down our standard of living.
