POOR PEOPLES CAMPAIGN TO REBUILD BUSHVILLE TENT CITY AFTER DEMOLISHED BY POLICE JUNE 3RD
WHERE: 411 Grand Street, Jersey City, NJ WHEN: Monday, June 14th at 4:00pm
Jersey City, NJ - The Poor Peoples Economic Human Rights Campaign a national campaign of poor and homeless organizations constructed their Bushville tent city in Jersey City on June 1st. The encampment served as a 24 hour vigil to give a name and a face to the human beings who have died or are not surviving the policies of the current administration. Bushville also provided a place for the poor and homeless in this country to make their voices heard in preparation for their March For Our Lives on Opening Day of the Republican National Convention this summer.
Several currently and formerly homeless and low-income families spent two days in the pouring rain building the encampment. On Thursday, June 3rd at 12:30am, the Captain of the Jersey City Police Department and other officers surrounded Bushville and issued residents a summons for "Posting and Affixing Signs Without Authorization." Later that day, the residents were ordered by police to leave the site. While the organizers were in court seeking an emergency injunction to stop the eviction, the Jersey City Incinerator Authority came to the lot and dismantled and impounded all of their belongings.
We refuse to be disappeared in America and we will be sure to make our voices heard at the Republican National Convention this summer. The faces of those affected by the war at home will not be invisible at our Bushville or at our March For Our Lives on August 30th.
Cheri Honkala, National Spokesperson for the Poor Peoples Economic Human Rights Campaign
