We
woke up in the parking lot we slept in last night to new PPEHRC
members from Rhode Island who had arrived in the middle of
the night. After breakfast, we started marching from Clifton
into Paterson. Some people joined us as we passed by, including
Aaron from St. Peter's Hospital, the largest provider of free
healthcare in the Paterson area. Aaron spoke to the cuts in
government funding for the hospital, showing that provision
of health care for its less fortunate citizens is falling
among the government's priorities.

After
we had marched through downtown Paterson, we went to New York
City for the press conference we were holding to demand that
the police correct its false claims that our March for Our Lives
was teaming up with the 9 Celebrities' Hip Hop March. Not surprisingly,
the police and the media continued their blackout of the poor.
Not deterred, we held an impromptu demonstration outside of
the Police Department, marching around the financial district
and chanting "Code Orange! The Poor are Dying! Billions
for the War, Still Nothing for the Poor" and carrying signs
saying "The Poor Will Have Their Voices Heard." When
we felt that the people in the streets had heard our message,
we spread out across a major avenue and blocked traffic to make
sure that those driving also heard us. At this point, the NYPD
was forced to listen to our demands for a new press release
to be sent out to the media with the correct information about
our March for Our Lives. |
