Bushville
August 24-Reality Tour in Manhattan and making signs at the Bushville
802 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn, NY
(G train to Myrtle-Willoughby Aves) espanol
The
morning began with a reality tour in Manhattan led by Ronald
Cassanova and Tim Dowlin both of the New York City Poor People's
Economic Human Rights Campaign.
The
tour went to the Holy Apostle Soup Kitchen at 296 9th St.
in Manhattan. A few blocks away from Madison Square Garden
this soup kitchen and medical center provides the needed services
to the homeless families and individuals in the area. It is
one of the few medical centers that provides HIV and STD testing
in the area, and it the church has a soup kitchen that serves
hot meals to hundreds a day.
"Currently
the city is spending One Million dollars to build a foot bridge
from the 34th St. Post Office to Madison Square Garden. A bridge
over the homeless"
--Tim Dowlin
"Every
time I talk to someone and they share their story with me
I feel connected to them. Today I talked with a man and heard
his struggle with healthcare, how it broke up his family,
and the road we all have been down. We all deal with these
problems and we need to start connecting even more. We need
to let people know that we are suffering too and that we love
them."
--Ronald Cassanova
The
group then headed over to the 34th St. Post Office where they
met up with another NYC group Picture the Homeless. We joined
them in their rally around the right for the homeless to receive
mail at the post office. Having an address or a place to receive
mail is a necessity when receiving public assistance.
After returning to the Bushville we welcomed many newcomers
to the Bushville and continued to make more signs in preperation
for the weekend and our march on Monday.
