Reporters crowded around members of the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign in front of the Statue of Liberty, as we again announced our plans to march from the United Nations to Madison Square Garden without a Permit.

"32 million children living in poverty, 18 thousand people dying due to the lack of healthcare. These are our children, and they are dying everyday."

Cheri Honkala, National Coordinator of Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign testified to the money that is currently being spent on the war in Iraq and how our children are dying both in Iraq and at Home.

"Every person is a child of God created in God's image and entitled to a slice in the resources that God has provided for our common well being. Marching for Economic Human Rights is an action of working with God's intention that all people can thrive."

Noelle Damico a Long Island minister of the United Church of Christ and the catalyst for the School of Theology of the University of the Poor spoke of the role that congregations are taking in the fight for Economic Human Rights in this country.

Healthcare is a Human Right. Everyday I see people who are sick or dying because they don't have Healthcare. A National healthcare system is cheaper and can provide a higher level of quality than our current system. People who are in charge are too dedicated to making a profit than to provide healthcare to our people.

Michael Terry a Doctor for La Clinica de la Raza, a community health provider in Oakland California and a member of the People's Health Movement

Despite threats from the NYC Police Department and false press releases that have gone out stating we are marching from the free speech zone; the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign again announced its pledge to march poor and homeless families from across the country from Dag Hammarskjold Plaza at the United Nations to Madison Square Garden on the opening day of the Republican National Convention.

This is not an issue of permits, traffic, or grass being trampled. This is an issue of our first amendment right to free speech.

"Currently the City of New York in is a public relations campaign with their NYC welcomes peaceful protesters campaign. We see it is a cover-up to give them permission to use tear gas and batons after they have given us discount coupons to Applebees."

Our march is going to be a nonviolent march. We will be marching from the United Nations to Madison Square Gardens where we will then issue a citizen's arrest for George W. Bush for crimes against humanity. We have invited international human rights monitors from across the world to join us and bear witness to our attempts to break the isolation that the poor in this country face everyday. We are confident that the New York City Police Department will respect our first amendment rights to free speech. We come in peace and expect the same in return.
