Bushville
July 25, 2004 East Orange
espanol

We were invited guests at the United Missionary Baptist Church of East Orange, where we were also offered lunch and housing for the night. Our Forward Team spent time in the cities of Orange and Belleville where they mapped out our route and spoke with churches about our March for Our Lives; an Italian bakery donated bread and other food to us. Some more people - including Galen's children - joined the March later in the afternoon.

Galen spoke on Air America, a nationally broadcast NPR show, that held a mock Democratic National Convention and had people calling in from around the country. Galen's speech - below - challenged the Democrats and Republicans to visit Bushville and speak to those who know the issues of economic oppression firsthand.

Galen Tyler speaks on Air America to a mock Democratic National Convention:
Thank you for inviting me to the Democratic National Convention. The real people on the front line who face economic terror every day and need Homeland Security are the poor and unemployed in this country. The Republicans and the Democrats have both abandoned the poor in this country and have given us - the poor and the unemployed - no choice but to get organized. No longer are we going to be fooled by their misleading information on welfare reform being a success. They know that people have died as a result. The country has an all-time high unemployment rate and job loss, with no safety net. If they are really about change, they should visit Bushville. At Bushville they can hear from poor and homeless families from around the country on what they see needs to be changed.

They can follow us right now on this mobile Bushville where we are marching throughout Northern New Jersey by looking at our website at www.marchforourlives.org.
