July 24, 2004 Newark to East Orange / Espanol

Today we marched from Newark to East Orange. We said goodbye to Kathy, Glen and Joe from Rhode Island, and look forward to seeing them again early next week. Members from Poor Voices United in Atlantic City joined us for the eight mile trek.

"Jannette's Restaurant" in Newark donated lunch to the marchers, which was a welcome break from the humidity and rain. We talked to a lot of people about the March for Our Lives along the way - a rap artist performed for us and is interested in joining up with us during the Arts and Culture Events during the week of August 23rd
.

Reverend Eduard Gil with the New Jersey HUD Tenants Coalition told us about the destruction of 450 housing units to be replaced with 50 townhouse units.

We arrived in East Orange late in the afternoon, and some more marchers arrived later at night. After speaking to a number of churches, Amy and Lindsey - who are part of our Forward Team - were able to get food donations from a church food pantry, and the United Missionary Baptist Church found us housing for the night. Pastor Sykes invited us to church tomorrow to talk to the congregation about the work we are doing.
