Despite sweltering heat, mosquito attacks, and encounters with local law enforcement, the Poor People's March successfully arrived in Batesville, MS after two days of marching. Tomorrow the march will travel to Nashville to begin again there. The march left Marks early on the morning of the third and continued throughout the day. Two marchers suffered minor injuries, including cuts and falls, which required brief visits to the hospital in Batesville. On the night of the third, marchers set up tents in an emergency pulloff by the side of a state road in Mississippi. Despite copious amounts of bug spray and numerous repellant coils (many thanks to the Minister and Mrs. Crawford!), mosquitos made sleep impossible for many. Marchers rose early the morning of the fourth and continued toward Batesville. The cloud cover that had mitigated the heat the day before cleared, leaving the line to march in the sun. The March arrived in Batesville, tired but determined, at about 5:00 pm. Tired participants made camp the night of the fourth in the parking lot of an abandoned grocery store at Highway 6 and Eureka in Batesville. That night, after it began to ran, Minister and Mrs. Crawford came to the aid of the march once more, providing two hotel rooms nearby where people could take showers. Shampoo and soap were donated by DIVA (Diversified Innovations, Versatile Achievers), under the leadership Wonder Doss (President) and Connie Crawford (Vice-President). Everyone at the campsite was extremely surprised and grateful; some had not had showers in more than seven days. On the fifth, the March will make its way through Nashville and camp at the war memorial plaza there.
