Alternative Breaks in Kensington!
Come spend your FALL or SPRING BREAK in Kensington.

One of the best ways for students to get involved is to come and visit us. Every year we host almost a hundred students for day, weekend, and week- long trips. This is a unique, exciting opportunity that cannot be reproduced anywhere else! Working side by side with our local organizing and education team, students are immersed in a struggle that has produced the movement to end poverty in this country.

While here students will participate in various different activities

  • Tour the neighborhood
  • Distribute food at welfare offices and in the neighborhood
  • Document economic human rights violations
  • Attend rallies and protests, musical and cultural events
  • Meet leaders of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union and hear their stories
  • Have dinner with families involved with the Kensington Welfare Rights Union
  • Attend educationals (on everything from welfare reform to student organizing to globalization) led by those persons who work directly in the topic of discussion
  • View amazing films and documentaries that focus on the work of the KWRU and the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign

The focus of the breaks is "Change not charity!"

The purpose of these breaks is to expose students to the realities of poverty and to introduce them to the movement to end poverty, therefore students looking to build a house or sort clothing should look elsewhere.
If you would like to organize a break for you school, give us a call at 215-203-1945 or email us at students@kwru.org

We can assist you in fundraising ideas and provide you with pre-trip educational materials.
Spots fill up quick so please call or email us right away!
