Bob
Kasen Memorial Wall Destroyed
We are sad to report that the
City of Philadelphia has destroyed the mural
of the late Bob Kasen. This
60 foot piece of art was painted by members of the Kensington
Welfare Rights Union to honor the visionary labor leader. This
popular mural was painted legally on the wall of a house owned by a KWRU
member, with their permission. We
are stunned that the city would paint over this memorial.
This is a letter from Bob's
widow, Cecilia Perry:
October 14,
1999
Dear Cheri,
Galen called me this afternoon
with the news that the city destroyed KWRU's memorial wall to Bob. I felt
devastated. I heard the sadness, anger, and frustration in Galen's voice.
This act of violence is
a frontal assault on KWRU. But, they cannot destroy a movement by desecrating
their monuments. What they don't understand is that such acts against
you will only strengthen your resolve and generate more sympathy and support
from others.
As Bob might have said,
you must be doing something right if they are going after you with such
viciousness.
My spirit and thoughts are
with you on each day of your historic march. I hope to join you in Fort
Lee, New Jersey.
Love to everyone,
Cecilia
