Home About the Campaign March of the Americas
Day 3 - Tacoma Park to College Park
Marchers woke up in Tacoma Park, Maryland this morning. Singer-songwriters Cathy Grier and Robin Rene each performed for the March and marched with us.

Waiting for the police decisionA few hours after arriving in a public park in College Park, Maryland, the women, men, and children on the March of the Americas were asked by police to leave the park. After walking all day in the sun we had stopped to sleep on the park grounds. While we were gathered in the park for an educational discussion late this afternoon, we were told by the police that we could not stay for the night.

Marchers Gathered at ChapelAs the police forced us to leave the park, the Police Lieutenant told us that the University of Maryland offered to let the March sleep on their lawn for the night. All the women, men, and children walked through the dark to the University, only to be met again by police.

The police now said that we could not stay on the University of Maryland lawn.

Students rush to supportPolice instructed the marchers to keep walking. At that point, we didn't know where we would spend the night. We sat at the University Chapel and were joined by students from the University of Maryland who came out to support the March.

Police stand-offAfter a tense stand-off, police finally gave the marchers special permission to return to the original park and sleep for the night. We declared victory, and finally at 11:00 PM, after four hours of police harassment, we marched back to set up camp for the night.

This is more and more true with the kind of dislocation we're seeing, with the jobs lost to automation. The economy is a money economy and if you don't have money, you can't get what you need. And yet the only way you can get money, especially with the dismantling of the welfare state, is to get a job, a job paying decent wages. You have McJobs, and jobs on every level that are being eliminated. Read more...
